Calcasieu Solar Developer Now Points to AI Boom as Louisiana Power Demand Grows
A solar project approved near Bell City in June is now being highlighted by its developer as part of a much larger electricity story: the enormous amount of power expected to be consumed by artificial intelligence and data centers.
Westbridge Renewable Energy, developer of the Southern Prairie solar project in Calcasieu Parish, released an investor update on August 28 discussing what it called growing “AI-driven demand” for electricity across North America.
Southern Prairie received its own section.
The company described the Calcasieu project as a 200-megawatt solar facility paired with 55 megawatts of battery storage and said it is located in a state experiencing significant growth in industrial, manufacturing and data-center-related electricity demand.
Westbridge CEO Stefano Romanin went considerably further in describing the broader market.
“The defining constraint on AI is increasingly power,” Romanin said.
He said utility-scale solar paired with battery storage can be among the faster ways to add generation in some U.S. markets, then identified Southern Prairie as an example of the type of project Westbridge develops in strategic locations.
That does not mean Southern Prairie has a contract to power a data center.
Westbridge explicitly says it does not.
But it does place the recently approved Calcasieu solar development inside a much larger shift now taking place across Louisiana: enormous new electricity users are arriving, and energy developers are positioning projects around the demand they expect to follow.
Southern Prairie was approved near Bell City
The Calcasieu Parish Planning and Zoning Board approved Southern Prairie on June 16 by an 8-1 vote.
The project is proposed on roughly 1,100 acres near Lionel Derouen and Fruge roads in the Bell City area on property associated with Sweet Lake Land and Oil Company.
Unlike the heavily contested Cajun Crescent solar proposal north of Moss Bluff, Southern Prairie moved through the local process with support from planning staff, nearby residents and regional economic-development interests.
At the time, the contrast looked primarily like a land-use story.
It still is.
But Westbridge's new statements add another layer.
The developer is now talking about data-center demand
Westbridge's August 28 release was not primarily an announcement about Southern Prairie.
The company announced an agreement to sell another solar-and-storage project in Alberta, then used the release to discuss what it sees happening in electricity markets across North America.
AI infrastructure occupies a substantial part of that argument.
Westbridge pointed to major technology companies signing large power agreements for solar and battery resources elsewhere in the United States. It then described its own U.S. portfolio, including solar projects in Louisiana and separate data-center development projects.
Southern Prairie was subsequently singled out.
According to Westbridge, the Calcasieu project has secured site control, completed initial environmental studies and selected a point of interconnection.
The company then connected the project's location—not a particular customer—to Louisiana's growing electricity demand.
That distinction matters.
Westbridge specifically says there is no Meta connection
The August 28 release mentions Meta and several other technology companies when discussing national examples of data centers contracting for renewable electricity.
Westbridge anticipated the obvious inference and expressly rejected it.
The company says neither Westbridge nor Southern Prairie has any relationship, agreement, arrangement or affiliation with Meta or any Meta data-center project.
It also cautioned investors that its discussion of AI and data-center demand should not be interpreted as evidence of a signed hyperscaler contract or AI-related revenue that has not separately been announced.
In other words:
Southern Prairie is not a disclosed data-center power project.
What has changed is the market context its own developer is using to explain why projects like Southern Prairie may become more valuable.
That context is becoming difficult to ignore in Louisiana
Louisiana is simultaneously courting some of the largest electricity-consuming developments in the country.
Meta's massive Richland Parish data-center campus has already transformed the state's conversation about generation and transmission.
Other large data-center proposals have followed.
And here in Calcasieu Parish, a separate data-center development has been proposed in the Moss Bluff area on property associated with Kenny Nichols. That project has not received final local approval.
That proposed development is separate from Southern Prairie.
So are the solar projects proposed around Moss Bluff.
There is no evidence presented here that Southern Prairie, the Moss Bluff solar developments or the proposed Moss Bluff data center have contractual relationships with one another.
But they increasingly belong to the same regional question:
How much new electricity infrastructure will Southwest Louisiana need if a new generation of extraordinarily power-hungry developments actually gets built?

Moss Bluff is already seeing the land-use side of the same transition
North Calcasieu has become a particularly visible example.
The 375-megawatt Cajun Crescent solar project north of Moss Bluff was denied after substantial neighborhood opposition and remains tied up in litigation.
A separate and much larger proposal, the Persimmon Energy Center, has since emerged across portions of northern Calcasieu Parish near the Moss Bluff, Gillis and DeQuincy areas.
Developer Orion Renewable Energy Group has described Persimmon as a potential 1,000-megawatt solar and storage development covering roughly 4,600 to 4,700 acres.
As of August, parish officials said a formal special-exception application had not yet been submitted.
That project is also separate from the proposed data center.
Again, proximity and timing do not establish a commercial relationship.
They do, however, demonstrate how quickly the development conversation is changing.
The next fight may be less about solar than electricity
Solar projects are visible.
Data centers are enormous.
Transmission infrastructure is difficult to ignore once construction begins.
But underneath each individual proposal is a more fundamental question about the future of Southwest Louisiana.
For decades, the region's energy economy largely meant producing, refining, processing and exporting fuels.
The next phase may increasingly involve something else:
Producing enormous quantities of electricity for industries whose appetite for power did not exist at this scale a decade ago.
Westbridge's latest statement does not prove Southern Prairie will power AI.
It does something more limited—and still significant.
The company that won approval to build a major solar-and-storage project in Calcasieu Parish is now openly telling investors that AI and data centers are changing the electricity market around projects like it.
That is worth watching.
